What is AEO & GEO? A Simple Guide to AI Search Optimization

By SEOYug Team · · 4 min read

In shortAEO and GEO explained in simple words: how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews choose which businesses to mention, and a practical checklist to get cited.

More and more customers now type full questions into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google and read an AI-written answer instead of ten blue links. If that answer recommends your competitor and not you, you lose the customer before they ever visit a website. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are the names for the work that helps your business become part of those answers.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO – what is the difference?

  • SEO helps your pages rank in the classic Google results.
  • AEO focuses on giving short, direct, trustworthy answers that search features and voice assistants can quote.
  • GEO focuses on generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode) so they mention and cite your brand.

In practice they overlap. AI systems still rely heavily on pages that are indexed, well structured and trusted — so good SEO is the foundation of AEO and GEO, not a separate game. Google itself says there are no special technical requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

How do AI assistants decide which businesses to mention?

Each tool works differently, but the signals they lean on are similar:

  • Clear, factual content that answers the exact question asked.
  • Consistency – the same business name, services, location and contact details everywhere.
  • Third-party mentions – reviews, directories, news articles, industry lists and forums. Local SEO studies now describe citations as “the new link” for AI visibility.
  • Freshness – up-to-date pages, prices and opening hours.
  • Accessibility – pages that crawlers can fetch quickly, with important content in plain text.

Google also uses a technique it calls query fan-out: one question is broken into many related searches across sub-topics. Pages that cover a topic thoroughly, with clear sections, have more chances to be picked up.

A practical AEO / GEO checklist

1. Write answer-first content

Start important sections with a one or two sentence answer, then explain. Use the real questions customers ask on calls and WhatsApp as headings. A short “In short” summary at the top of articles helps both readers and machines.

2. Add FAQ sections to service pages

Five to eight honest questions with clear answers (price ranges, timelines, process, locations served) give AI tools exact text to quote.

3. Use structured data that matches the page

Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article and FAQ schema help search engines read your facts correctly. Google stresses that structured data must match the visible text on the page.

4. Make your brand facts consistent

Check your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Justdial, IndiaMART and other listings. Same name, address, phone, website and service list everywhere.

5. Earn mentions on trusted websites

Digital PR, guest articles, local news features, association memberships and genuine customer reviews all create the third-party evidence AI tools look for.

6. Keep the technical basics clean

Allow search crawlers in robots.txt, keep pages fast on mobile, link related pages together and keep key information as text (not only inside images or PDFs).

7. Measure regularly

Ask the main AI assistants the questions your customers ask (“best SEO company in Jaipur”, “dentist near Vaishali Nagar”) every month and note who is mentioned. In Google Search Console, traffic from AI features is included in the normal Web performance report.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Publishing thin AI-generated pages in bulk – they rarely earn trust or citations.
  • Hiding prices, locations or contact details – AI tools cannot recommend what they cannot verify.
  • Blocking crawlers by mistake in robots.txt or a firewall.
  • Ignoring reviews – ratings and review text are strong signals for local recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers are built on top of search indexes and trusted websites. AEO and GEO extend SEO with answer-first content, structured data and brand mentions.

Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in ChatGPT?

It is optional. Google says it does not need special AI text files for AI Overviews or AI Mode. An llms.txt file can still be a helpful summary for some AI tools, but it is not a ranking requirement.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

Technical and content fixes can be done in weeks; building enough mentions and reviews to influence AI answers usually takes a few months of consistent work.
