In shortHow Google AI Overviews and AI Mode work, what they mean for website traffic in India, and 9 practical steps to keep your business visible in AI-powered Google Search.
Google Search now often shows an AI-generated summary – an AI Overview – at the top of the results, and offers AI Mode, a chat-style search for longer, more complex questions. Many business owners ask us the same thing: “Will people still click on my website?” Here is what we know and what you should do.
How AI Overviews and AI Mode work
According to Google’s own documentation, AI Overviews appear only when Google’s systems think a summary will be more helpful than classic results, so many searches still show none. AI Mode is designed for exploration, comparisons and reasoning. Both can use query fan-out: Google runs several related searches across sub-topics in the background and then shows a wider set of supporting links.
Importantly, Google states there are no extra technical requirements and no special markup needed to appear in these features. A page simply needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.
What this means for your traffic
- Simple informational questions (“what is SEO”) may get fewer clicks, because the answer is shown directly.
- Commercial and local searches (“SEO company in Jaipur”, “best hotel near Amer Fort”) still lead people to businesses – through links, Maps and Business Profiles.
- Quality of visits can improve: Google says clicks from pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with people spending more time on the site.
- Brand matters more: being named inside the answer builds trust even before the click.
9 steps to stay visible in AI-powered Google Search
- Cover topics completely. Because of query fan-out, a page that answers the main question and the related follow-up questions has more chances to be linked.
- Answer first, then explain. Put a clear one or two sentence answer at the start of each section.
- Use descriptive headings. Write headings the way customers ask questions.
- Link related pages internally. Google recommends making content easy to find through internal links.
- Keep important content as text. Prices, services, locations and specifications should not live only in images.
- Add good images and video that support the text – AI Mode can show visual results too.
- Keep structured data accurate and matching the visible page.
- Update your Google Business Profile and Merchant Center – Google specifically mentions keeping this information current.
- Offer a good page experience – fast, mobile-friendly, without intrusive pop-ups.
How to measure AI traffic
In Google Search Console, clicks and impressions from AI features are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type. Combine it with Google Analytics conversions (calls, forms, WhatsApp clicks) to see whether AI-era visitors are turning into customers.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can limit what Google shows from your page using snippet controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet, but this also affects normal search snippets, so use them carefully.
Does schema markup guarantee a place in AI Overviews?
No. Structured data helps Google understand a page, but there is no special markup for AI features and no guarantee of being shown.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
Yes. AI features draw on Google’s index and ranking systems, so strong SEO services remain the foundation of visibility in both classic and AI results.
